The Journalists and Writers Foundation held a Night of Thanks and Respect to Martyrs and Veterans Wounded in Action. The program, which took place with the encouragement and support of President Suleyman Demirel, was held on Tuesday March 16, 1999 at the Lutfi Kirdar Congress Hall.

In a program where martyrs and veterans who sacrificed their blood and lives for the unity and integrity of our country were remembered and our feelings of gratitude were expressed as a nation, more than 2000 people together with 600 martyr and wounded veteran families living in Istanbul attended. There was a flood of tears that evening during which checks of assistance were distributed to the families of martyrs and veterans as a gift for the religious holiday of the sacrifice.

In the program Bora Gencer, Ertugrul Polat, Taner Aras, Eyuphan Cansever, Ismail Hazar, Omer Danis, Izzet Yildizhan and Zeynep added color to the evening with songs about soldiers.

Also, awards were given in the program to members of the media who had written about the themes of martyrdom and soldiery and expressed the feelings of the people and to individuals, committees and institutions that had stood behind the families of martyrs and veterans wounded in action.
