Arrest Warrant For Gulen Lifted

The arrest warrant issued by an Ankara State Security Court (DGM) for an Islamist sect leader, Fethullah Gulen, was lifted by an Istanbul DGM today

A panel of judges headed by Şerafettin Iste in the Istanbul No. 2 DGM, have completed their assessment of an Aug. 23 motion presented to the court by lawyers for Gulen, choosing to lift the arrest warrant issued on Aug. 11 by an Ankara DGM.The motion was transferred to the higher No. 2 DGM in Istanbul for consideration. Ankara DGM prosecutor Nuh Mete Yüksel said the lifting of the arrest warrant was a case of "misjudgment." Yüksel said there were no legal avenues left by which to have the warrant reinstated, but added that he might open a case against Gulen independent of the warrant once the indictment had been completed.

F Gulen, the leader of the Islamist Nur Sect, is widely known for the schools he has opened around the world. However, Gulen's schools have also drawn the attention of those who accuse him of trying to mask his true intention of overthrowing Turkey's secular system. Gulen is currently in the United States.
